Overview of Allergies
Allergies are a physiological error where the body reacts negatively to certain substances or foods.
An allergic reaction occurs whe the body comes in contact with the allergen. This can occur through contact with the skin, inhalation or ingestion of the substance.
Medical treatment includes: Avoidance of the allergen, mediciations to reduce the symptoms of the allergic reaction or injections to desensitize the patient to the allergen.
The word “Allergy” has become a generic term that has entered the public lexicon to describe allergies, sensitivities or intoloerances. Both allergies and sensitivities can produce similar symptoms and it is those symptoms that AAT address.
Conditions treated with AAT
Digestive System
Allergic reactions include acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, abdominal and intestinal pain, gas, diarrhea and vomiting.
Primarily caused by allergies/sensitivities to food and digestive secretions.
Respiratory System
Symptoms include hayfever, wheezing, allergy induced asthma, skin conditions, rashes and itchy watery eyes.
Can be casued by allergies/sensitivities to pollens, dust, food, chemicals and animals (including dog & cat hair and bird feathers), foods, air-borne substances and contactants.
Dermatological
Symptoms may include eczema, skin rashes, blisters and atopic dermatitis.
The main casue of dermatological reactions is allergies/sensitivities to food but can also be caused by allergies to plants, contactants and chemicals.
Headaches & Migraines
Caused by allergies/sensitivities to food such as chocolate and caffeine, airborne irritants such as pollens and chemicals including household cleaners, perfumes and vehicle fumes.
Tiredness & Fatigue
Many allergies result in lethargy and feelings of fatigue. Tiredness can also occur at certain times of the day, such as in the afternoon after eating.
Multiple Systems
Allergies/sensitivities affect multiple systems in the body, resulting in headaches, irritability, hyperactivity, mood swings, fatigue, tachycardia or inflammation. In children, such reactions can manifest as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which is often accompanied with redness around the eyes and nose and repetitive behavioral patterns.

Important
Due to the unpredictable nature of the human body, allergies and related symptoms, Dr Karen Tan and AAT cannot guarantee any results, as in the case with all forms of healthcare. Dr Tan also cannot guarantee that new allergies will not develop in the future. While Dr Tan and AAT can treat most forms of allergies, some cases do not respond to the treatment.
Dr Tan also advises that she does not treat cases of anaphylaxis.
FAQ
More on AAT?
Allergies/sensitivities are a physiological error where the body reacts negatively to harmless substances or foods. AAT is a treatment that retrains the body—similar to the way Pavlov’s dogs were trained to salivate at the sound of a bell-so that it no longer reacts inappropriately, AAT does not use medicines, herbal remedies or supplements.
Long term results are usually established in the vast majority of patients treated. The treatment is safe, non-invasive and suitable for people of all ages including infants and the elderly.
What allergies can’t you treat and why?
AAT can treat almost all forms of allergies/sensitivities. However, some cases do not respond to the treatment. Allergies can be complicated. For example, a person can have a reaction after eating strawberries, but if treated to strawberries, the symptoms remain. The true allergy/sensitivity might be to a chemical compound or some other component of the allergen which, when treated, will clear the allergy.
Another example is cat allergies. Some people will no longer react when treated specifically to cat dander or hair. Yet others don’t respond to treatment. The key is to find the exact substance the immune system is identifying as al allergen. For tose people who still react to cat hair after a treatment, the true culprit might be glandular oil, a specific protein or cat saliva.
Treatment can be also complicated by multiple symptoms, some of which may not necessarily be the result of an allergy. Conversely, some sufferers have multiple substances contributing to one specific allergy symptom. This makes the allergen hard to identify, isolate and treat. AAT conducts extensive, on-going research to increase the number of complicated allergies successfully treated.
How does the AAT treatment work?
AAT has applied the core principles of acupuncture to western scientific understanding of human physiology. AAT uses gentle pressure to stimulate points along the bladder meridian on the back, corresponding with the major organ systems. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this stimulation relaxes the body and temporarily strengthens the major organ systems.
The body associates this positive stimulus with the allergen and is called a “positive conditioning effect”. And by associating an allergen with a strengthening fo the major organs, the body alters its perception and corrects its own erroneous response.
Has the AAT treatment been medically or scientifically proven?
Although medical or scientific studies have not been conducted on the AAT treatment, the effectiveness of the treatment has been demonstrated with over one decade of consistent results and solid success with thousands of people who have had their allergies/sensitivities significantly improved if not completely eliminated.
The AAT treatment is not a medical treatment. It has been developed from an entirely different field of therapeutics using the principles of acupuncture and naturopathic medicine with the scientific understanding of human physiology. Traditional acupuncture has been shown to have significant immune-enhancing effects in multiple medical university studies.
AAT is a drug-free, non-invasive treatment that corrects the error through a positive conditioning effect.
How do you test to see if your treatment has been successful?
Following treatment by AAT, patients are asked to expose themselves to the substance. In some cases, it may not be possible to have contact with the allergen until weeks or even months after treatment as would be the case of allergies to seasonal pollens.. However, upon exposure, all previous symptoms should be eliminated.
Does AAT treat anaphylaxis?
Dr Tan and AAT does not treat anaphylaxis.
How long will my results last?
AAT patients have consistenly reported long term results after treatment. However, Dr Tan or AAT cannot guarantee that new allergens will not be developed in the future. The causes that initiated the original allergy may become a factor in creating new immune errors. In most cases, the results have been shown to be long term.
Why should allergy sufferers choose AAT over western-based allergy treatments such as drugs or injections to desensitize the patient of the allergen or avoidance?
Avoiding substances which cause allergic reactions can be impossible for many sufferers, as in the case with allergies to airborne pollens, pollution or chemicals in building materials.
For people with multiple allergies/sensitivities, particularly to food, avoidance can have a considerable impact on the patient’s quality of life as they can often be heavily restricted to what they can eat.
Drugs such as antihistamines relieve symptoms of the allergy but do not eliminate the cause of the reaction so once the sufferer stops suing the drugs, the symptoms return. Aside from short term nature of the drug-based treatment, many people suffer side effects from drugs and the long term effects of drug use on the body are unknown.
Desensitizing the patient to the allergen involves a series of injections over many months and sometimes years.
Unlike all of these treatments, AAT is able to eliminate an allergy or sensitivity, allowing the patient to be exposed to the substance without any of the allergic reactions they had previously suffered.
